Psychosocial suffering often manifests as bodily pain and can be overlooked in clinical practice when cultural expressions of distress are missed. Understanding how expert family physicians recognize and manage psychosocial distress can enhance the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health challenges. Findings suggest that the key to contextualizing these vague presentations lies in unraveling the patient’s narrative and finding shared humanity. In this collaborative conference with SMRC and the Department of Family Medicine, Dr. Isabelle Leblanc shared her research insights on the topic "Too much pain, doctor!": recognizing and contextualizing cultural expressions of pain. The St. Mary's Research Centre is part of the St. Mary's Hospital Centre, a facility of the Centre universitaire intégré de santé et de services sociaux de l'Ouest-de-l'Île de Montréal. CRSM's community conferences aim to disseminate academic and scientific research throughout Côte-des-Neiges and Montreal, ensuring that the knowledge gained is shared with the communities we serve. This conference features two keynote speakers : - Dr. Anthony Albers (Associate Professor in the McGill Department of Surgery; Associate Scientist at St. Mary's Research Centre) - Dr. Jennifer Mutch (Associate Professor in the McGill Department of Surgery; Associate Scientist at St. Mary's Research Centre)
